Because one gallon of water weighs approximately 8.34 pounds at ambient temperatures, and roughly 8.0 pounds at saturated deaerator temperatures (220F to 227F), a continuous boiler consumes roughly 0.069 GPM per BHP. When factoring in standard continuous surface blowdown (5%) and an ASME continuous modulating safety factor of 1.15 to 1.20, industrial designers size boiler feed pumps at 0.08 to 0.09 GPM per Boiler Horsepower.
